Chapter 2
I Built His Throne
346 words
Lucas enjoyed everything I gave him.
Money.
Connections.
Respectability.
A home.
Then, after using me, he wanted to throw me away like trash.
“You said you loved me,” I said.
He looked bored.
“You believed what you wanted to believe.”
I almost laughed.
When his family went bankrupt years ago, everyone stepped on him.
We studied at the same university.
He was handsome, hardworking, brilliant.
A campus god.
I pursued him first.
I bought him things.
He accepted.
Eventually, we dated.
He brought me breakfast.
On my birthday, he gave me a bag made from his old jeans and raffia.
I was moved to tears.
That was how easy I was to fool.
When he wanted to start a company, I supported him.
My family paid ninety percent of the start-up capital through another person’s name because I feared hurting his pride.
The remaining ten percent, I lent him interest-free.
I drank with clients for his projects until my stomach bled.
I smiled when investors insulted me.
I convinced my father’s friends to help him.
Then his business grew.
He came home less.
His voice grew colder.
His eyes held more impatience.
I thought love had changed.
Now I understood.
He had only stopped pretending.
At the hospital, he said,
“We’ll divorce, but don’t think you’ll get a cent.”
He smirked.
“I can earn now. You’re just a fallen heiress who hasn’t worked in years. You can’t compare to me anymore.”
I looked at him.
“Fallen heiress?”
My voice was cold.
“I stayed home to support your career. I drank for your deals. I built the roads you walked on.”
He shrugged.
“I’ve already met the shareholders. I’ll buy back the shares. Starlight Group will prosper only in my hands.”
I laughed then.
Truly laughed.
He thought he owned Starlight.
He did not know the shareholders he had met were my father’s friends.
He did not know the real capital behind his company had always been my family.
He thought he had kicked me out.
In truth, he had just removed the last person protecting him.
